BRENTWOOD TRADITIONAL: A GLIMPSE WITHIN

Every project we take on at MLH holds a special place in our hearts. We often refer to each one as our favorite—at least until the next one comes along! Sometimes we wrap up projects back-to-back, while other times, we savor the process for months on end.

But Brentwood was different. From the very beginning, we knew this one was something truly special. Alison from Alison White Homes approached us with an exciting collaboration opportunity: a hidden gem she had just scored in an off-market deal. Little did we know, this home was nestled in one of the most coveted spots in the area—facing the Brentwood Country Club and just a stone's throw from the Country Mart.

As we began dreaming up the design, we found ourselves drawn to the rich history of traditional American homes. We wanted to take these classic design motifs and give them a fresh, modern twist. Think subway tiles, warm dark wood, heavily veined marble, and a palette of beige, greens, and even hints of yellow. We drew a lot of inspiration from our Jenni Kayne home tour visits, aiming to create a space that was not only beautiful but also inviting—somewhere anyone could easily envision themselves living.

The heart of the home? The kitchen, of course. And at the center of it all is a range hood that’s nothing short of show-stopping. Our lead designer found inspiration while watching HBO's The Gilded Age, where grand homes of the era featured expansive kitchens, bustling with kitchen prep. The large, dome-shaped hoods, made of metal, were as functional as they were beautiful, housing ventilation systems and tools needed to prepare lavish meals for large gatherings.

Our interpretation is a massive hood that spans the size of the entire range wall, completely wrapped in a gorgeous beige plaster. The backsplash features handmade Zellige tiles in soft gray and cream tones, perfectly complementing the star of the show: a stunning Ilve range that exudes vintage charm, all topped off with a slab of gorgeously veined marble.

Take a look below—we’ve shared the mood board that guided us through this project, along with some in-process photos of the build. Enjoy!
